Catherine Hay is a retired fashion educator who spent over a decade working in Toronto’s fashion industry before transitioning into teaching. She studied Fashion Design at Toronto Metropolitan University and went on to teach textiles and fashion design at both secondary and post-secondary levels. Throughout her teaching career, she led student tours to fashion hubs like New York, London, and Paris.
Catherine is also the creator of the popular YouTube channel Catherine Sews, home to 300+ videos featuring sewing projects, tips, and sustainable fashion techniques. Her focus on creativity, upcycling, and eco-conscious style has inspired a dedicated global following.
Although retired from the classroom, Catherine continues to share her love of fashion through guided travel. In the Spring of 2025, she hosted a sold-out tour to Venice, Florence, and Milan and the fall a tour to Montréal and Toronto with 15 incredible women on each of the tours.

Absolutely! We understand that solo travellers might want to share a room to benefit from the double-occupancy rate. We're happy to assist in pairing you with another traveller whenever possible. Pricing is based on double occupancy. If you’re traveling solo and want to share a room, we offer a roommate matching option whenever possible. You’ll be asked to complete a Roommate Matching Form to help us find the best match based on your preferences. If a suitable roommate isn’t available, a single supplement fee will apply.

When you're on tour, you will learn about local life. We'll take you inside workshops, cooperatives, and other spaces where locals bring their trades and traditions to life. We will spotlight artists, artisans, food makers, the creative economy and small businesses in those communities.

Travellers are solely responsible for obtaining or meeting all visas, passports, entry documents, health requirements, and any documents required by laws, regulations, orders, and/or requirements of the countries to be visited. Complete this process well in advance of the Departure Date. Travellers must consult the appropriate consulates to determine if any visas are needed. Failure to do so may result in refusal of travel, for which Open Doors Travel shall not be responsible. All guests travelling internationally are required to have a valid passport. Many countries require that an individual’s passport be valid for at least six (6) months beyond the conclusion of your visit to said country. The airline's ticket names must be identical to those of a passenger’s passport. Open Doors Travel will neither reimburse nor assume responsibility for any travellers denied boarding or refused passage or entrance to any destination for any reason. No refunds will be provided if improper or incomplete documentation results in denied applications, boarding or entry or delays in getting the proper approval.
In addition to appropriate travel documents for your destinations, Travellers 18 years of age or under travelling to any foreign destination when not accompanied by both parents must have all or some of the following supporting documents:
The Traveller shall be responsible for any and all costs related to required vaccines and medical testing before, during or after the tour as needed by their destination(s) or home country.
Important travel information regarding the new ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) visa required for travel to the UK starting January 8, 2024. The portal opens on November 27, 2023, and the application process is straightforward.

Do I really need a passport?
Yes. Open Doors Travel recommends that your passport be valid for at least six months after your travel dates.
Will my credit card work?
Absolutely — Visa, Mastercard, and Amex are welcome almost everywhere. Just check if your bank charges a “foreign transaction fee” so you’re not paying for souvenirs twice.
Can I plug in my stuff?
If traveling from North America or Europe, you'll need a Type G power plug adapter to fit the sockets in the UK.
Will my cell phone work?
It will… but your bill might work overtime. Roaming charges can be sneaky. Ask your carrier about a plan before you leave.
How does tipping work?
When dining on your own, tipping works much the same as in Canada or the U.S.—15–20% is customary in restaurants. For group meals arranged by Open Doors Travel, gratuities are already included.
What’s the deal with metric?
Speed limits are in kilometres (100 km/h is about 62 mph). Temperatures are in Celsius (20°C is a comfy 68°F).
What if I get sick?
Visitors are responsible for all emergency medical costs, so having travel insurance is mandatory. It’s a small investment that can save you from a very large, unexpected bill.

Absolutely! We understand that solo travellers often prefer to share a room to take advantage of the double-occupancy rate. In the event that we’re unable to find a match, you should be prepared to pay the single supplement. We’ll keep you updated along the way and do everything possible to ensure a great experience.
The price per person for single occupancy is higher than the price for double occupancy. Why is that?
We understand your concern, and we're happy to explain! The single-occupancy fare is the actual cost of the tour. When two people share a room, the cost of the room is split, resulting in a lower rate per person for double occupancy. Single travellers are never penalized; they just cover the full cost of the room on their own. If you prefer not to share a room, simply book the single-occupancy option and let us know you're travelling solo. We'll adjust your booking to reflect the Single Supplement rate. Will my price change with currency fluctuations?
We will finalize the price of your tour once we have received your first per-person payment and purchased the currency for your tour. The price quoted may increase or decrease, and you will be contacted if there is a significant change in price due to currency fluctuations.
